Introduction: Developing Chinese (2nd Edition) is a set of nationally planned textbook for higher education during the “Eleventh Five-Year”. Based on the well-designed structure of the first edition, this edition adds more elements in tune with the times. It includes 28 volumes with altogether 34 books.

Combining the cultivation of integrated language skills with the training of specific language skills in its compilation, this set of textbooks can be divides into three levels (elementary, intermediate and advanced) and five series (comprehensive, listening, speaking, reading and writing), among which the comprehensive series is the bulk and the others are the accompanying series. This volume, following the Elementary Comprehensive Course Ⅰ, is suitable for learners who have mastered the most basic Chinese sentence patterns and 1,000-1,200 common Chinese words and have acquired the most fundamental Chinese communication skills. It aims to develop the comprehensive language skills while observing the priority of “listening and speaking”. Attention is paid to the scientific soundness and accurateness of the language elements selected and the arrangement and interpretation of these elements. The texts, with their lengths controlled, are scientifically sound and interesting; the content is very practical, characterized by concise and brief explanatory notes; and the exercises include both writing and speaking ones. The book tries the best to combine the linguistic forms with the communicative situations, functions and needs so as to cultivate students’ abilities in communicating in correct and accurate Chinese and across cultures.
